Amazon have refunded me for something I did not return.

I have had an Amazon notification to say Amazon have received me return and processed a refund. I had not initiated a return. When I look through my recent ordered I see one item is marked as returned when it is still in my possession.
I am very confused by this and the only thing I can think of is that the courier did not log the delivery properly and Amazon think it is undelivered.
Now the message states they have processed a refund to my credit card but does not show in my transactions (probably will show tomorrow). The dilemma is - do I tell Amazon? What are my rights regarding an refund I did not request for an item I still have?

Just contact Amazon via the Amazon website. You can chat online or request a phone call.flo22 said:I have had an Amazon notification to say Amazon have received me return and processed a refund. I had to chuckle that you consider this to be a dilemma. And then I saw your signature and realised why you consider it so.flo22 said:I have had an Amazon notification to say Amazon have received me return and processed a refund. Your rights? They are to be put back in the correct position, i.e. the refund reversed. Amazon's right is to not be out of pocket because of what looks like a genuine mistake.5 -
Credits will only show in your CC once they have credited, as unlike debits they do not require authorisation by your CC.Life in the slow lane0

Really? Do you not read half the posts on here? Either we have every person that works in the banking industry in the UK on here or lots of people wonder if they can keep the additional salary their employer accidentally paid or if they really need to declare that accident they had to their insurers if no one is claiming etc.Aylesbury_Duck said:

Based on prior research I think many people will think that it's a victimless issue and that the OP should keep stum unless Amazon realise their own mistake and then dont fight the recharge.
The reality is there is probably someone sitting there waiting for their refund to come through who'll now be told the item was never received back. In an ideal world the OP would advise they never returned the item and Amazon will spot whose return has incorrectly be credited to the OP. But based on my experience of Amazon Customer Service the OP will probably just be told thanks for the honesty but keep the item/we wont recharge and the other customer will have a fight to prove they returned it.3 -
After being cut off twice mid conversation I eventually got through to Amazon and was then transferred to another department. The seller had made a mistake and incorrectly recorded it as not delivered even though the tracking photo showed it on my doorstep with the front door open. Because it was the 3rd party sellers mistake apparently I get to keep the item and the refund which has been confirmed in an email by Amazon.30+ years working in banking5

As predicted... whilst amazon get a lot of bad rap on here, and sometimes its deserved, I've found that they often rather generous in situations like this. I've had an unordered extra item in packages and told to just keep it, had a multi-part item which where one part went faulty but it wasnt possible to return the whole thing (its designed to be stuck to another item) and they said to keep it and a full refund would be given etc.flo22 said:

I've had similar experiences. Not had a bad customer service situation with them yet.1

I guess Amazon can afford to be generous from the savings they make in (not) paying tax.

Some of these fishy incidents are due to reviews scams and the like. If I find the link describing them I'll come back and post it.

Mention of a 3rd party seller could suggest Amazon has been generous with someone else's money in this instance.DullGreyGuy said:

My view is if Amazon, eBay, etc tell a buyer to keep something they've been refunded for it should be part of the user agreement and the seller would have no comeback as they've agreed to the terms of the site when they decided to sell but it does beg the question of what would actually happen if a seller went down the road of recovering their money via small claims.
Doubtful that will happen to OP obviously
All that said it could be FBA and Amazon might refund the seller if delivery is recorded as having failed. In the game of chess you can never let your adversary see your pieces1
