A Clearing Bank or an alternative to run a simple local charity....difficult
I gather the problems relate to I/D acceptance to pay in or cash cheques. No consistency. One cashier requires a signature, another the Account card, another the card and PIN code, another all these and Photo I/D. One even insists the I/D has to be a valid passport. The branch does not hold trustee details and all dealings have to be by post or a Premium number phone call to the subcontinent. Changing signatories is also incredibly complicated and can take weeks.
Thank you for your advice so far. We will make enquiries at Virgin in town and a few mutual BSs. Sadly there is no TSB near us and there are only 4 Metro banks in the whole of the North of England.
Why do they make it difficult to run these accounts the OP questioned - as someone who knows they are a bloody pain in the a%£e to run. Normally retired people who die and nobody informs the bank then some other person wants to start running the account but they can't as the mandate has not been changed etc etc I could go on forever!
Then there is the KYC - banks are legally obliged to know their customers so identity is required etc etc.
