I must admit I've never really understood what Blue Rewards is all about or why......far to complicated for me. However events have taken over and I'm switching my Barclays current account to another high street bank.

I've emptied my Rainy Day Account & requested online that it should be closed. Cancelled my direct debit for money paid into my current account. But I've done nothing with this Blue Reward account. It's empty and I hope it will be closed when my current account is switched.

Do I need to actually do anything else ?

    A zero balance is probably enough, closing the RDS should happen when you switch but would certainly do no harm

    The DD is a requirement for the reward but the other 'pay in' requirement of £800 might be an external standing order. If so cancel that

    This is what Barclays have to say about it
    • When you can close Barclays Blue Rewards
    • You can cancel your Barclays Blue Rewards at any time either through Online Banking or with the Barclays app. If you do this before 5pm on the last day of the month, we won’t charge the next monthly fee.
    I think you have done enough but for peace of mind you could close Blue Rewards. It's under the Manage accounts tab

    Never heard of this way of paying money into a current account.

    Sorry, that should be standing order not direct debit.
  • No, can't close the Blue Reward account online. Trust Barclays to make it as difficult as possible......it's no less than I was expecting. 3 options:
    * Telephone banking or
    * Visit branch or
    * Send a letter
    I will phone tomorrow......see if I can get thru, after that I'm doing nothing else.

    Barclays Blue rewards used to be a nice little earner- the £3 monthly fee was easily cancelled out by the money made from paying out DDs. I was lucky enough to have them when they were doubled with a switch deal, and that happened twice. I think the profit was something like £11 pm.
    Long gone!

    I never really understood the point of Blue Rewards......it was never blue and I didn't see any rewards. One Barclays account charged me £5 a month and another Barclays account gave me the £5 back.

    What was the point of all that ?

    Haha yeah I know what you mean regarding the £5 hokey cokey. I got it because at the time the 5% was a very good rate, now that is almost standard.

    Other people did, myself included.
    If you didn't understand and didn't see, why on earth did you apply for it?

    Choose Manage accounts then Close an Account. Select Barclays Blue Rewards from the list of accounts

    No......as I say, I'm being singled out for special treatment. I have selected manage accounts, then close accounts, then Blue Rewards and it then says I cant close it online. Options are phone, letter or visit branch. Luckily I have another option up my sleeve which is do nothing, let them sort it out. In a week's time I wont have a Barclays current account as it'll already be switched.
