Still trying to digest some of the info in this thread! But can you clarify "through long-term non-use" please?
Cars don't like being left standing for long periods - especially out of doors. Battery goes flat, tyres deteriorate and develop flat-spots, things rust, etc. Mice nest in the engine bay, and chew the wiring.

Also, it's a target for vandals, and when the local petty villains notice it's not moving, they'll have the wheels off, and the catalyst if it has one.

But don't let me put you off the idea!

  • Do you know someone trustworthy who could be insured to drive the car (I'm assuming you would pay for this), tax it and maybe drive it once a week to keep it ticking over? Failing that, someone who could store the car for you off road so you can SORN it.

I was thinking this.  You are lucky that you knew though.  A friend of mine's daughter told his doctor he shouldn't be driving & the doctor on her word & told the DVLA.  The big problem was nobody took the trouble to tell him.  Now that was fun as he owned a car business.  It's a wonder they didn't hear at the other side of the country.

Thanks, I'll wait for confirmation I can't insure it then speak to my brother in law who's a bit of a petrolhead and has some space though not much.

Given the price of second hand cars right now and the uncertainty of your situation you might consider selling the car and buying again when its settled unless its a particularly special car.

It's sort of special, 23 yrs old but under 50k mls, drives almost like new but automatic. Some sentimental value as well, my father bought the identical model new then gave it to me at 3-4 yrs old, I scrapped that a couple of years ago then found this one to replace it.
