Most likely it's an anti-money laundering / KYC check and that's all, but then if you cannot have one is it the end of the world? I've always refused one as I'd rather have a free choice of card and get the rewards I want from the business spending (that used to be very sizeable)

You might be conflating Corporate and Business Amex products here, there's a diff.

Possibly, its a $4.5bn company and I know all the partners had Centurion Cards, Directors had Platinum and us plebs Gold.
