Do I need to give 30 days notice if the contract is expiring and I do not want to renew?

HI,
My Virgin Media contract is expiring next week. They have increased the price of broadband service to £51 a month which is more than double what I am currently paying. For this reason, I do not want to renew the contract when it expires. When I checked with the customer service agent, they are saying, even if I do not want to renew the contract I will have to give a 30 days notice. Is that the way how it work? Why am I liable to pay when the contract expires and I do not want to renew it?

You contract is not expiring, the minimum contract term is ending and you move onto a rolling monthly contract. You need to give the contract termination notice if you want to end the contract.

Yes you do need to give them 30 days notice & will be charged at the new rate for most of that time, given you are out of the fixed term in a week.

Try online chat & see if you can get a better deal.
I was paying £80 a month which was going up to £152. Contacted them & got same deal for £84.

As above, it is definitely worth haggling.  I managed to get a considerable discount.

Word of warning - if you do intend to cancel, write to them and get recorded delivery as proof of receipt.  Allegedly Virgin Media are known for making it almost impossible for people to cancel the service.  I believe they were recently investigate (it may be still on-going) by OFCOM for their treatment of customers wishing to cancel.

    Kind Regards,

    Bill

The last month of your minimum term can also be the 30 day notice period , unfortunately if your minimum term expires next week , you should have called to quit around 3 weeks ago so the last day of the minimum term could also be the last day of service , however if you have actually told them you are quitting, then you will pay 1 week of your current price and 3 weeks of the new price , you should have service during this period so it’s not like you are paying but not getting anything for your money , but TBH , this is normal practice, unless you were on Openreach and moving between providers, in those cases the notice is only 10-14 days but obviously if you quit within a minimum term there will be early termination charges.

Just give your notice to cancel now. They'll call you back tomorrow with a better price. Haggle.

If you read their FAQs on cancelling, they say you either have to telephone, or use old fashioned post. They don't give an email address, and their chat system is next to useless. Don't know if wotsap is any better (I suspect not).
The only functioning email address I have is for the complaints team - Have sent them an email telling them I will be cancelling at the end of my contract, and have followed it up with an excruciatingly slow chat session. 'erbert on the other end of the keyboard acknowledged receipt of my intention to cancel, but says he can't action it as it is more than 60 days away so I need to phone them.... The shortcomings of their system is not my problem, but I have written acknowledgement of the cancellation.

Her courage will change the world.

Treasure the moments that you have. Savour them for as long as you can for they will never come back again.
