I didn't leave a tip because it was a very expensive time, as moving always is.  In hindsight I wish I had though. As someone else mentioned above they are probably on a low wage (compared to solicitors, estate agents, etc) and it's bloody hard work. They also moved everything without causing any damage anywhere which is a bonus.

Interesting you see that as a bonus; I'd see that as an expectation from the service you pay for.

We've typically given each person £10-20, depending on to what extent they go above and beyond. eg, do they just put the boxes in the designated rooms or do they actually look to leave things as neat and tidy as possible when they leave.

I tend to give between £10-£20 per person but it depends on how they were and how difficult the job was.

Most the jobs I've had quoted have been done remotely and those were always much cheaper than the people that have been around (you can see the cost saving with remote quoting). As such they've not appreciated the very steep driveway or the awkward stairs etc when quoting.

Generally the guys make one comment at the beginning and just crack on with it. An associate used to do the job and pay wasnt much above NMW if you weren't a driver and rarely were you paid the full hours you worked (or at least what they believed they were due).
  • Our removal crew were great - polite, helpful - went above and beyond (helped us with moving a large heavy fridge out of the flat and back in to the communal area where it was being collected by a third party, and when we got to the new house, moved the two sofa-components of a three piece leather suite we'd bought from the sellers from one end of the house to the other as it didn't work for us where it was - it was flipping heavy AND slightly wider than would comfortably fit through one of the doorways too!). They were also careful, respected  our "fragile" marked boxes and worked lovely and fast and without fuss. Our bill for the removal had come in at the lower end of what we were expecting, as well.

We tipped ours £20 each and were happy to do so - they thoroughly deserved it.

I do a lot of research before booking a removal firm.  The last 2 moves I used a local family firm which had 5* reviews.  They were a bit more expensive but were worth every penny.  On the last move it was nearly 100 miles they worked solidly until everything was done, didn’t have a break.  They didn’t want any tea/coffee or choccy bikkies or homemade cake :D. They had big padded covers for the tv, chairs and mirrors which was brilliant.  I gave them £60 between 3.

About 3 moves ago we had bought new furniture and had 2 2-seater  leather sofas to get rid of.  They asked if they have the sofas instead of a tip  :). That saved us a lot of hassle
