BA Reschedule Due to illness

Hi there,
We were due to fly home from our summer holiday yesterday. Unfortunately I took ill on Sunday night and had to go in fo emergency surgery Monday morning.
My partner informed BA we were unfit to fly and BA said to submit a certificate from the hospital, which she did last night.
Now, obviously, we want to get home ASAP, but speaking to them today, BA said it could take 48hours before their team can verify the certificate, and then of course I don't know how quickly they'll attempt to get us home: same say as they accept the medical certificate or could it be a further few days until the actual flights?
Does anyone have any experience of this with BA? Does it tend to take the full 48 hours before the medical certificate is accepted for can it be quicker? And how long did it take you to then get new flights?
Many thanks

Might be easier to go through your travel insurance...have you spoken to them?0

Won't your travel insurer step in and take care of this, as they'll presumably have to be involved with the medical costs, extra accommodation, etc, anyway?0

It may help if you identify the flights that have seats available that you want to get. Please get us home asap leaves may be harder to arrange than, "I can see there are seats available on the BA1234 ABC TO LHR on the 28/9, please can you book them for us".I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages, student & coronavirus Boards, money saving boards. Did you buy flexible tickets? Normally you'd simply go online or telephone them and just book the alternative flight you now want to take.
If you didn't buy flexible tickets then you are basically asking for a gesture of goodwill, unless you are alleging they made you ill? As such you've no leverage to hurry them up etc as that is more likely to push them to just telling you that your tickets were non-flexible so you just need to buy a replacement ticket at your own expense.1
