Bank card cashback, flights and hotel sites.

Lots of debit and credit cards now offer regular cashback promotions on hotel booking sites. Lots of these sites also offer flights. I'm wondering if you can get the cashback on booking flights with the hotel booking sites? Looking for instance at my Halifax promotion with booking.com it says "Earn 4% Cashback on your Booking.com purchases!" which sounds encouraging. But it also says you must make a booking and complete your hotel stay. So maybe not.
I suspect the answer is no. But has anyone here tried this?

I would be very, very wary about introducing a third party into a flight booking.
