I discounted a couple of 3 storey houses with the kitchens in the basement - I hoped not to move again and the thought of a room that was always in use being an extra flight away as I got older put us off totally.0

How about putting the lounge in the cellar, and have a kitchen/diner upstairs?
Call it a "cinema room" and it might put ££££ on your house value. (Ha haa.)I removed the shell from my racing snail, but now it's more sluggish than ever.1 -

I personally really dislike lounge/diner/kitchens in a single room... kitchen/diner + separate lounge is fine, kitchen + lounge/diner is fine... not the three together.
Our kitchen is 2m x 3m and it works well.

It may be the stairs that give the cellar kitchens I've seen a cramped feel, as well as the lack of natural light.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards.
