I discounted a couple of 3 storey houses  with the kitchens in the basement - I hoped not to move again and the thought of a room that was always in use being an extra flight away as I got older put us off totally.

Each to their own I guess. It is only an idea at the moment. There seems to be quite a lot I have to do regarding regulations. If not Im still fine as I am!!
  • How about putting the lounge in the cellar, and have a kitchen/diner upstairs?

Call it a "cinema room" and it might put ££££ on your house value. (Ha haa.)
I removed the shell from my racing snail, but now it's more sluggish than ever.

All of the TV house wonderful programmes seem to try and make the kitchen part of the living space and activities of the house; putting it in the cellar would be very isolating.
I think the OP already has this, but wants to segregate the cooking area from the living room area - nothing wrong with that.

I personally really dislike lounge/diner/kitchens in a single room... kitchen/diner + separate lounge is fine, kitchen + lounge/diner is fine... not the three together.
Thank You Emmia...Im glad you understand. It would help enlarge the lounge and give me a sizeable kitchen in what is essentially a smallish property x

I can understand why you're interested in doing this, but I do wonder about the 2.5m headroom which may feel very cramped, and issues like walking up and downstairs to get cups of tea etc. especially as you age... Is there no option to extend the ground floor a little, to fit in a small separate kitchen, or to partition one off?

Our kitchen is 2m x 3m and it works well.

Good idea.....That would be a mega kitchen and eliminate any messing around with pipes.....I need to run that past my partner. The Kitchen would then be able to take a largeish table and chairs. Thanks Again...worth considering

Most houses built today have a ceiling height of around 2.4m (saves having to cut plasterboard down) - Half my kitchen has a 2.4m ceiling (as do the rooms upstairs), and I don't find it confined.

Treasure the moments that you have. Savour them for as long as you can for they will never come back again.

It may be the stairs that give the cellar kitchens I've seen a cramped feel, as well as the lack of natural light.
