Think the key (aside from logistics of tanking and rerouting utilities) is as much the "feel" of the cellar area, I've lived in houses where even the access to the cellar feels like an afterthought and you're dreading what might be lurking there every time you venture down, and then others where it does almost feel like an extra room waiting to be used.Never take a stranger's advice. Presumably you don't have an outside space to extend into, to enable a larger ground floor area?1

Sounds a dark place to put a kitchen. Also if you are 65 it could be that stairs may become an issue for you in the future, do you really want your kitchen down stairs? I'm thinking of having to carry groceries down the stairs at the very least.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. All of the TV house wonderful programmes seem to try and make the kitchen part of the living space and activities of the house; putting it in the cellar would be very isolating.

Why not a lift & a utility room rather than all the kitchen. If you spend any real time in the kitchen it could become a bit depressing to always be in the dark. Believe me that having to go down a flight of stairs just to boil a kettle in 10 years or so could become a bit of a pain.

I am much older than you and 3 years ago was still running up & down stairs. Then the proverbial hits the fan. Hopefully that will happen again, but no guarantees.

I personally really dislike lounge/diner/kitchens in a single room... kitchen/diner + separate lounge is fine, kitchen + lounge/diner is fine... not the three together.1 -
