Migration from tax credits to universal credit

  • I had that leaflet this week too. Joint CTC claim and husband also on contributions based ESA. I’m expecting a migration letter sooner rather than later.

Depends which legacy benefits he receives, which area he lives in, and the make-up of his family (single or couple, ages of children).
CTC only, couple with one earner, income too high for WTC.
Where do they live, and how old is the oldest child on their claim?

Working from home colleague, lives on Merseyside, oldest claim child (of two) is 17 so would come off claim in August next year leaving just one child on claim (which would then be a nil amount).

I suspect quite a lot of people who only received a small amount from Tax Credits will decide not to bother claiming UC, due to UC requiring regular Job Centre appointments about work search.

Appears many people have been used to a very relaxed time on Tax Credits and when they switch to UC, they find it totally different.

The comments I post are personal opinion. Always refer to official information sources before relying on internet forums. If you have a problem with any organisation, enter into their official complaints process at the earliest opportunity, as sometimes complaints have to be started within a certain time frame.

Best we can say at the moment for those circumstances is that they'll get their migration letter between Nov 2023 and March 2024.

The latest stats I have seen show 26% of TC claims are being closed with no claim to UC having been made.
There is then a 1 month grace period for backdating if they make a claim for UC as a result of TC claim being closed, but I have no information on how many may do that - presumably some will ignore the migration notices and only make a claim for UC once they realise their TC payments have stopped.

    .

Do they say if this is due to not claiming or not being eligible? (Just out of interest)

  • I dread to think. We get CTC, WTC, Carers, and DLA for my 11 year old. I'm in Devon,  seen no info about the migration here. Hubby only works 16 hours (we both have additional health issues but not 'severe' enough to get anything for, despite impacting how much we can work). I expect UC will be very difficult for us

To be fair you can't expect the DWP to know that.
All the DWP can do is tell people that the law has changed and so they now need to claim UC instead of Tax Credits.
If someone chooses not to claim claim UC the DWP can't force them to claim  UC or to say why they have chosen not to claim UC.
