And what time was check-in at? Many hotels its 3pm or later so you should have been expecting at least some wait

According to the CDC bedbugs and flea bites are indistinguishable and both are hard to tell from mosquito bites

I also had thought possible mosquito/midge bites, or even sand fly bites if the OP had been down at the beach.

In my experiences, long ago now, bedbugs usually left bloodstains on bedding from getting squashed. Other critters don't.
