Flight diverted - compo?

We were on a Ryanair flight from Edinburgh to Marrakech, it left on time but 3 hours into the flight they decided to divert to Faro airport due to a leak in the front toilet. This landed in Faro about 17:30, we were then ushered into the departures lounge with no updates, no food vouchers, all Ryanair staff saying they don't know and isn't anything to do with them, we all eventually got kicked out the terminal to a hotel at 00:15 and half of us bused to a hotel that we were told was 15 minutes away, but in fact was 55 minutes away. Half left in airport due to no other transport coming for them (children, pregnant women, elderly forced to sleep in the airport)

Arrived in the hotel roughly 01:30 and told to be ready for 4am collection for a 7am flight.

Arrived at the airport and staff said nothing on system and awaiting confirmation from "Dublin".

This was then delayed until 13:30....then again 17:10...

Other than the horrendous treatment given to passengers with zero care for the wellbeing of them. What compensation can be claimed?

Technically the first flight left on time but diverted due to a technical fault of a leaking toilet, is this able to be claimed as cancelled or another option? Or is this a loop hole you are unable to gain any compensation from?

The second flight can definitely be claimed under being delayed for a significant time.

Has anyone else been in this situation?

  • What travel insurance do you have?
  • the delay compensation calculation bears no relationship to the flight departure time... it's when you arrive at the purchased destination.  For many events (air traffic controll problems, and weather for example) no compensation can be claimed as such things are outside the airlines control.  If the delay in getting to the destination was under airline control responsiblility (and a leaking toilet fits that descripton) than you can claim the compensation from the airline.
this is separate from the airline's responsibility for feeding and accomodating you while you are their passenger between destinations.. and from any travel insurance you may be able to use.
not sure that you can claim airline compensation for second flight (but they should still have been looking after you if it was delayed)

It is through my bank, Virgin money.

I have already spoke to them and they sent me a form to complete so they can advise on what options are available.

We have been in contact with others on the flight, through the normal claim process on Ryanair's website the first flight is stating as arrived on time, but the second flight from Faro which had a different flight number gives you the option to claim for delay.

The entire situation was not managed at all, didn't look after the wellbeing of any of the passengers.

I don't understand how a direct flight to from Edinburgh to Marrakech which gets diverted to Faro is considered to have arrived on time.  You have to resolve that point before anything else makes sense - although if the airline is paying the same compensation for the second flight i would worry too much. I don't think you get two lots of compensation but I've never been in that position.

I understand what you are saying, but this is technically 2 flights then with long delays for both. The initial flight and then the repaired technical fault flight were separate flight numbers and subject to delays. I will clarify with Ryanair but it is a strange situation to be put in.

You may have one claim against the delayed arrival in RAK - but not two claims for compo.
  • Just wondered if you had any luck claiming with Ryanair? We were on the same flight but not getting anywhere with the claim. They keep closing off the form and directing us back to the online compensation which doesn't work
