Help! Car insurance premium doubled after no fault accident

  • In basic terms, you're deemed high risk and have been penalised for it.  I know it's not your fault, but it doesn't matter, you've been in an accident and therefore you are a riskier proposition than someone who hasn't.  Factor in the fact that premiums are going up for all and you've got a perfect storm.  Don't reopen anything, just suck it up and chalk it up to life experience.
  • You say the accident happened just before your previous renewal, but didn’t affect the premium then? If the increase was due to the accident, surely it would have jumped then?
Similar situation and mine was actually reduced for 2 months prior to the renewal by hundred quid then went up by 100% on renewal surely this is just daylight robbery

No consolation but a very similar thing happened to me. Someone reversed into my car. I had to inform my insurance company although it cost them nothing for the repair.

My premium went up 90+% which was way in excess of the average inflationary increases at the time (2022).

I raised a complaint but just received vague platitudes in response like there are many reasons why premiums may increase. They refused to answer direct questions as to which reasons affected me specifically.

This meant there was no way I could prove, to the other driver's insurance company, that the incident he caused I was involved in had any effect on my premium. ☹️

How is it robbery? You don't have to pay it, there are plenty of other insurers.

I did contemplate going back to the at fault driver’s insurance company. The only issue is almost 18 months have passed since it was settled and I worry (a) it could end up being a painful process to re-open it and seek another insurance company to absorb the price differential; but mainly (b) I’ve heard re-opening it could affect future insurance premiums. I am possibly between a rock and a hard place!

Have you checked the price without the accident?

  • Apologies in advance for the long post….
Hi danman007, it may be worth confirming that the incident has been correctly recorded as a ‘No fault’ claim on the CUE databases. This is the database used by all insurers when they provide you with an insurance quote.
I had a ‘No fault’ claim in December 2018, my vehicle was repaired, no excess paid, my no claims bonus was not affected. All costs recovered from the party at fault.
However, when getting new car insurance quotes the insurer involved at the time of the claim was always the most competitive and I continued to insure with them (as they knew it was a no fault claim)
A couple of years down the line I became aware of an anomaly when getting a new quote which caused me to submit a SAR request to MIB (motor insurance bureau.
Long story short on the CUE database the claim status had remained OPEN even though all monies had been recovered by my insurer from the third party.
OPEN status defaults to ‘At fault’ claim.
This caused inflated risk when obtaining quotes.
Subsequently I received financial compensation from the insurer at fault, a lengthy process but now all recorded accurately on the systems.
