RCD tripping overnight

Another reason could be the communications hub for the smart meter being too close to the consumer unit - There is some anecdotal evidence on the web suggesting this is a possible cause - https://community.eonnext.com/threads/7034-Smart-meter-causing-RCD-unit-to-trip

That's interesting, it's an old unit (suspect 90's), and I think the smart meter is Gen 1. Previous homeowner didn't mention any issues though.

It's curious that it is only the one switch causing the issue. I was suspicious of an outside light that has cabling running to it under mortar, but the light is working so it's not on the circuit causing the issue as that remains off now.

At this point I suspect wiring somewhere in the kitchen/conservatory or, as you say, an issue with the unit.
  • Be a shame if it is the fridge freezer as we only bought it a month ago, as I say we've unplugged everything except the oven and the RCD was still tripping.

We have a combi boiler but I think that running off a different circuit as it's upstairs and powered on when we reset reset the switches that aren't tripping the RCD(however it has developed a fault now, possibly because of switching off and not the fault?)
The fact the fridge is new makes it seem that much more likely a culprit in my book. Maybe it just has a manufacturing defect. Seems like good news to me- if you can show it's causing trips then you should be able to get a replacement.

It is the least likely possibility. It's far more probable that it's doing its job.

I've only just noticed that there's an outdoor socket on the conservatory close to the inside socket, so that would probably be on the same circuit. Opened it up and whilst I can't see any corrosion I did notice the inside of the cover was a bit damp and the rubber seal is breaking down. Guessing that's probably the culprit, electrician coming out later.
