JFK - LGW cancellation and related issues

Just had a nice holiday in New York. My 20:05 flight was first delayed because of a technical fault and then we were told it was cancelled at around 00:30. There were hundreds of stranded people and we could have waited hours for help from staff who were rightly prioritising families with children etc. They also said they had very few hotels and to organise your own if you can.
My wife managed to book via booking.com a hotel nearby. We had to collect our checked luggage and paid a ‘taxi’ $50 for a 5 minute ride to the hotel where we were told that they didn’t have any rooms despite our booking. They did say that there might be rooms around the corner at The Hilton which there were. Here we were charged $503 for the night - as it was now 2 on the morning we just paid this and went to bed.
We managed to book onto a flight to LHR from JFK the next day (I’m writing this while I’m waiting to board).
We’ve incurred costs of around $600 so far plus around an extra £100 for the travel home from LHR to where I live (near Gatwick).
Can anyone provide any advice on what I can claim for and how to go about this please?
I’ve never claimed for a flight delay or cancelled flight before.
Many thanks for any help or advise.

Obviously recovering the cost of the phantom Booking.com hotel room ($347) is a separate issue. I can’t hold BA responsible for that. Any advice on getting this reimbursed also warmly received0

There will be a claims form for expenses on the BA website. You can claim for ‘reasonable’ expenses during your delay.
