We ordered our suite the first week in July and were told that it was 8 - 10 weeks delivery. We didn't get it until the first week in November.0

When DFS delivered our suite a few years back they also had to take the front door off.
Shame the sofa didn't last. Getting my new sofa this week from Argos.

I bought a sofa from M&S last year and I think there were different rules about returns depending on whether you ordered it in store or over the internet. If I remember right, if you ordered if over the internet and it wouldn't fit through the door they would take it back but not if you ordered it from the store. Must be something to do with the rules about distance selling and cooling off periods I guess.0

When ordering just simply write on the order form the width of the doors it must go through, therefore if it don't fit then it's their problem0

I have to disagree. Basically if you see a suite you like you order it. If you then write the dimentions of the access on the form & the latter is smaller than that of the suite you wouldn't expect them to make it custom fit would you.
If you know the suite will not fit the room/access point then you really ought not to be ordering OR you should make alterations to accomodate this.0 -
If you have a problem getting a sofa in, taking windows out not an option.... one of the other options is to get a recliner sofa as these normally come in pieces and are assembled in the room.... we know this because....
... a sofa company failed to deliver twice before we had our internal wall put up (without it you could have come down the side through the patio and in) we werent able to get our new sofa in our house! they tried got it wedged in my house and couldnt get it out again for ages (i told them to come and look in and see the space available - no problem love they said!). As this was there fault we did get a refund (well mil did as she bought us it as a gift) we had though made it a specific requirement that they deliver before the wall was up, we gave them loads of notice and they still failed to deliver .Debt free May 2016 (without the support of MSE forum users that would never have been possible - thank you all)0 -
All these companys import these sofas in and most of the time order your spec which is why they take as long to arrive as a new car.
If you have a look on ebay there are several companies which import the same goods in from the same suppliers and sell them direct to you.
None of the sofa companies lose money in their regular 50% sales which means the mark ups the rest of the year are heavy.
The main benefit of buying new from ebay is they have the stock physically there, they will deliver, and most are quite happy for you to visit and check out the quality.
There are several out there selling the same models that are sold in John Lewis or Marks and Spencer but they sell them at the same prices as the aforementioned companies offer in their Jan clearance sale. Certainly worth a look0 -

I'd expect the sofa company to be the experts on whether a sofa will fit through a doorway, so I think telling them the door size is reasonable,IF you point it out to them.
It's not a question of expecting a custom build, more them being able to say "sorry, won't fit" and letting you know prior to delivery.0 -

And the main problem with buying via ebay is that it's ebay .... with a total lack of interest when things go wrong0 -

maybe cos they knew i was 'trouble' or maybe cos they were decent workers. So my advice is to ask the deliverymen if they could take the doors off for oyu.
Modern houses (mines is 15 years) are built like dolls houses so i guess there must be some kind of leeway
Some years back we bought a very large sofa from John Lewis. Although it would go through the front door it wouldn't go through the living room door. The delivery men got a saw from their van, cut the middle beam out of the window, put the sofa through and then screwed and glued the beam back. Incredible! Not sure if they'd still do this today, mind.0
