BT email address

I am close to the end of my BT broadband and phone contract after nearly 20 years, so I am now considering alternatives.  My immediate problem is my email address.  I would like to retain my current address if possible. If I move away from BT can I retain my 'btinternet.com' email address or will I have to accept a new one from my new provider?

The free option is basically webmail.
The £7.50pm option will allow you the access you probably have at the moment via an email client, Outlook / Gmail / etc

It's generally better to go with an email provider that isn't tied to a subscription service / your isp. Gmail (Google) or Outlook (Microsoft) are popular - and free. Many will already have a Google or Microsoft account, or both, to cover other services. And large reputable providers like these are likely to be more secure for the majority of people (even if they undoubtedly harvest your data).

This is a good time to set up an email address that isn't tied to a broadband provider. You can then start to migrate all your correspondence away to this new address.
You could choose a free platform like outlook.com or gmail.com, a paid service like protonmail.com, or you could even buy your own domain name and mail hosting from someone like mythic-beasts.com.
Any of these will be cheaper in the long term than paying BT £7.50 a month.

  • Ozzig, Datz and OrizB, many thanks for your very helpful responses.  I will need to do some price comparisons in order to make the right decision, taking into account your suggestions.
    Thanks again.
