My Direct Debit has been changed to a 'subscription'

I notice that my Mobile network provider has changed the nature of my monthly payment to them from a 'Direct Debit' to a 'subscription'. How will affect my rights to stop the payment if I wish to discontinue the service.

from the bank end nothing changes it is still a direct debit and you still have the same protections of the direct debit guarantee and the right to cancel it at any time at the bank

what is not clear is the effect on the mobile phone end of the transaction - have they changed their terms of conditions because they've called it a subscription or is it just a name change? that is what you should be looking at

If its still listed as a active Direct Debit at the bank end, absolutely nothing has changed or will change.

Is it still listed as a Direct Debit when you log in and view the list of DDs you have on the account?

No. The Bank has categorised my payment as SUB (The bank uses this code to denote 'subscriptions') whereas on my previous statements it has always shown as a DD. It flags up on my statements a NEW subscription. I've checked with my provider and cannot see any notification to me that they have made changes.

Just to clarify. The payments have always been included in the list of Direct Debits set up on the bank account. The payment has now been taken off the DD list and is listed as a subscription. (Its the only subscription on the account.)

    OK.

Have you given this company your debit card number at any point whatsoever?

No I haven't. Only ever set my payment up as a direct debit from current account
