I recently confirmed the identity of an infant for a couple I know for the first passport - very straightforward.

Why resurrect an 18 month old thread to ask?

The have to be something similar to the above or a retired person who's last job was. Note the two that are in bold, a manager of a limited company or vat registered business... they're the two that open it up to a vast range of people.

We have a running joke in our local because everyone now and then someone says they are struggling to find someone and then someone shouts out who can do it and about half the pub regulars put their hands up as there are several trades running their own limited company, the manager behind the bar, the publican, the manager at a nursery, a retired copper, a chartered accountant, a few other micro LTD directors etc.

Are the rules different 18 months in?

It was our next door neighbours that I actioned - no mention of any status of the confirming source as I recall.
    Strange one that.

    I guess this wasn't a first passport?

It was their first baby passports - two of them.
    Why strange ?
I was simply confirming them as the children of applicants known to me.
I can't recall if I had to quote my previous professional standing - maybe that was the key issue ?

Dont know how long ago you are talking about but certainly in recent years the witness has to state their occupation and either British or Irish passport number

I dont know what checks they do behind the scenes but recently a retired senior police officer who's signed dozens of applications got deemed "inappropriate" without contact from anyone but they were happy with the next supplied signature from an accountant.

I have known of professionals getting called at work to confirm it was really them who countersigned.

Yes to both the above in my case, standard procedure.

Likewise but dont know why a retired chief superintendent thats signed dozens of passport applications without issue was suddenly deemed unacceptable without having any calls or missed calls etc.

probably an inexperienced case worker   Being retired or unemployed does not stop you from being eligible if the profession was acceptable. (And any retired person over 70 is acceptable - no matter what their job was)
