Long term car hire Australia

Hi we are going to Australia for 3-4 months winter of 2024 and am looking for any advice on long term car hire - has anyone got any tips thanks

    A few years ago, the 'man in the pub' purchased a cheapie when he got there and sold it again when he'd done.
    Not sure if that's still possible?
