Halifax Clarity or Chase Debit

We're off to Germany for a few days soon, which would be better for us to use to pay for things, our Halifax Clarity credit card, or Chase Debit card where we get 1% cashback?

I screwed up booking the hotel on my John Lewis card and got stung for over £14 in currency conversion fees (the hotel charged our card in Euros). Don't want to make the same mistake again.

Exchange rates will be all but identical, the Clarity card is a credit card so will give you more protection, especially if the purchase is over £100.

Always wise to have a backup payment method so I would take both.

Chase will be better for ATM withdrawals. Clarity for hotel or car hire deposits.  A credit card is always useful for emergencies.

  • Both would tick all the boxes.

But Chase gives 1% cashback which Halifax Clarity doesn't.......

    I would use both.

Use Chase for lower cost purchases or where protection isn't required.

Use Halifax for remaining purchases or where funds may be ring fenced (deposits) such as car rental and hotels.

I think that's what we concluded. Thanks.
