I booked a flight with Ryanair with my wife and 2 kids, I pre-purchased a large bag. It was one single booking for all of us.

I couldn't fly because I had to help with a family medical emergency.

When my wife got to the airport Ryanair wouldn't let her check in the bag as it was under my name on their system and, as I wasn't travelling in the group, they couldn't check in the bag. My wife had to pay for a new bag at Ryanair airport prices.

Is this right? Can I ask them to refund the price of the bag as we had already purchased it?

I wrote to Ryanair and they said all items were non-refundable and they would never refund the second cost.

It feels unfair to me. Any suggestions?

Sorry, the title should be "Refund for Ryanair bag??"

Sounds about right for Ryanair. 
You brought the ticket and bag but did not travel. They are pretty consistent on their no refund policy.
