I did mean for curtains as well as the window film @EssexHebridean - I do have a habit of only saying/writing half of what's in my head (which is a good thing in many cases!). Yes, you do have to make sure it goes on straight and smooth unless you want to swear every time you look at it. If the day/night blinds are the same as my friend has then they are lovely and very effective.
I'm monitoring my gas/electric usage now and keeping the central heating on manual for the time being as the temperature is so variable. I probably need to make more use of the slow cooker too - that's the trouble when it's packed away because of lack of worktop space - it tends to get forgotten about.4 -
All the energy fixing chat is interesting. It’s something we’re also looking into.

@EssexHebridean - I have to say thank you to you for your couscous with LO lamb which you mentioned the other day! I had some breast of lamb left after Sunday's roast and used it up with some couscous and roasted veg (also LOs) and DH said he really enjoyed it! He doesn't enjoy couscous with veg normally but the addition of lamb seems to have had a positive effect!!!

Good of you to go & help out with the heating. Until we had our heating upgrade in Autumn 2020, we had ancient storage heating & so of course, on moving in, that's when we discovered Economy 7. Night storage heating, as far as I understand, mostly became a 'thing' when there was lots of spare capacity in the off-peak UK electricity grid - I expect those of a similar vintage to myself can remember the old 'Creature Comforts adverts for this system - my favourite one was the little penguin who pinged his flipper! These heaters, if our old ones were anything to go by, can last a long time, so I think people will sometimes have moved into homes much later, not really knowing anything about them. We certainly didn't, but soon realised we had that Economy 7 meter/tariff for a reason! They took all the charge on the cheaper night time tariff then put the heat out during the day (at the most basic level, & ours were defo basic!) Our new gas CH heating system costs us less to heat the house than the old storage heaters, but tbf, they were old & probably inefficient due to age. I am always worried when I see people querying their bills/tariff & they are still on Economy 7 tariffs yet have no storage heating (which was pretty much the point of the two tariffs) or the other way round, when they do still have storage heaters yet are contemplating changing to a standard tariff because the day-time price is cheaper.
You know, I think one good thing that has come out of the shocking rise in energy costs has been that we are all discussing the subject a lot more. It is affecting everyone & in talking about it, I think we are all becoming more knowledgeable & thus less likely to find ourselves getting ripped off.

When we moved into our bungalow we didn't have storage heaters but were on Economy 7; water was heated by an immersion! We quickly changed to a normal meter once we had installed gas central heating. No idea how much our bills would have been with Economy 7 as we had the CH put in within a couple of weeks of moving in as we moved in at the end of October so it was pretty cold but with hot water bottles and blankets we were OK, also went to bed early as it was warmer than sitting in the living room with no heating! Funnily enough we have gone back to those days 20+ years later!5

I have finally caught up with both of your diaries EH, good to hear you are settled into your new home. We had a sale fall through this year so understand how stressful the process is.
The energy talk has been a good reminder for me as I've been monitoring our tarrif and it's come down slightly so wondering if now is a good time to fix, we are with BG. Heating not on yet but we have recently had a log burner fitted so that's quite a novelty and getting lit at the weekends.Hope you're having a lovely weekend.June 2025 - part 1 - £19,145 part 2 - £21,973 Total - £41,118 29 months to go!5
