I would go to the press. I would even flag this to Martin Lewis to bring media attention.

Have you ever used your Halifax accounts for buying cryptocurrency?

I have used Halifax to buy cryptocurrency, yes. I did not realise that was illegal?
Depending on who you bought from, it may have been illegal. But even if you bought from reputable ? crypto exchanges, banks may not like this, and discontinue your banking facilities.

Without a CIFAS fraud marker, however, it remains a mystery why Nationwide would have turned your application down. May be just co-incidence. Try somewhere other than Nationwide or Lloyds banking group.

If you need to continue with crypto, your best bet for a current account is perhaps Revolut, though they have so far failed to obtain a UK banking licence and therefore can't offer FSCS protection. I also don't think they offer ISAs, and it woud be risky to keep savings that are not FSCS protected. To spread your risk, not having all your money with a single financial institution is prudent, anyway.

I would suggest you contact CIFAS again, I wonder if you submitted your SAR in the short period between being send the letter and your original bank having reported to them.
Checked and still nothing on CIFAS as of today.

Equifax produces a CIFAS tab. I've started paying for it, as I need to understand what's actually happening.

When you say as of today, CIFAS take a few days to respond to a DSAR, as far as I am aware they do not provide members of the public with real time access, so there could have been a lag. As others have said also check National Hunter and request a full credit report with all CRAs.
What makes me doubt this is that Nationwide refused to open my bank account prior to CIFAS replying to my email with the subject access request. Surely CIFAS would be able to comment on what it is that I have there if that's what's stopping Nationwide from giving me a bank account?
In any case, I have asked CIFAS to give me an updated one.

As I pointed out in my first post:
any negative data on CIFAS does not show on credit reference agency reports to customers, only to firms.

You need to SAR CIFAS to reveal any adverse markers.

What is the point in Equifax offering a paid service to check CIFAS if the data doesn't show there? I'm not sure I follow... Sorry!

Do they offer a paid service to check CIFAS, or do they offer a paid service to check your (pretty meaningless) credit score?

Some CIFAS (victim) markers do show on credit files, but not the ones that you need to be concerned about. CIFAS members (banks etc.) can see the others on credit files too but these are hidden to customers.

Paying a credit reference sub is a waste of money. You can see all useful info they have on the free versions.

They don‘t show all the CIFAS markers in the free or in the paid for versions.

On the other hand, there is a value associated with knowing you can see everything there is to be seen in the OP's circumstances.

@zjoliveira have you tried to open a Monzo, Starling or Chase account yet? These are fully featured accounts which normally open instantly and without a hard credit search (so long as you don't apply for an overdraft). I have no idea why Nationwide closed your account but I can only think it must be something other than fraud reported by Halifax.

What is there of value in the paid-for versions that you can't see in the free versions?

MSE doesn't seem to suggest that anyone needs the paid-for versions: https://www.moneysavingexpert.com/loans/check-free-credit-report/

That isn't what I claimed there to be. I was inferring a value in terms of regaining control of a perceived crisis.
