Can I use an old sim while a new one awaits a ported number?

I'm transferring my mum's phone over to Virgin as Plusnet mobile is closing soon. I gave them the PAC code and request to keep the old number when ordering the sim. Setting it up tonight, going by what their site says, it could be a couple of days before the number is ported over.
She can't be without the phone for this long. So, could I put her old sim back in over the weekend, then go back to the virgin sim next week? Or will that mess with Virgin's already flaky systems? Her Plusnet account should still be active I think.

Nothing is likely to happen with the porting process during the weekend. Continuing to use the Plusnet SIM until the port occurs and service ends should not in itself affect the process but the Virgin SIM ideally should be actively connected in a handset in readiness. Any unlocked old or spare phone could be used to keep both SIMs active, if her phone is not dual-SIM.

Just keep using the old SIM until it stops working, then swap.

I swapped a few weeks ago, and ported 2 sims. If you gave them the PAC on Friday before 6pm it will swap on Monday, or Tuesday if it was after 6pm. You just continue to you use the old sim until it goes dead.
I assume you are aware that it’s now owned by O2 and they will swap you to O2 before the end of the year. One of mine is swapping on the 28th September.1 -
Thanks for that, appreciate it. She has the old sim in the phone, I'll swap it over when it goes dud.Actually it'll be cutting it fine, as Plusnet is due to take another payment on the 5th, hopefully we'll be before that date and can cancel payment.0

Plusnet will give a pro rata refund for any unused days.1 -
I didn't know that, really appreciate the info!
