First SIM for a kid going to senior school?

What would be a good sim for their first ever SIM? Or do you just get a decent cheap SIM deal?
Thanks.

How much do you expect/want them to use the phone?
My daughter has an rwg sim with £5 credit just for emergencies and doesn't use mobile data, just wifi at home.

My children are both on a 5GB deal with Lebara. You can get that for a fiver a month, which seems reasonable to me. There is also a 3Gb plan, but that only saves you about 50p a month.
  • Use the MSE comparison tool or the uswitch one. Lebara have introductory offers too some as cheap as 99p for the first 6 months/

At senior school they will need some data to access school portal etc. So I'd recommend something like lebara. You can buy a £5 sim from Amazon/Argos etc. It will give calls texts and 5 Gb data. The following three months will be £2.50 and then back to £5

I agree they are likely to need data.  My son has just finished his A-levels, but when he was at senior school the WiFi never worked, so they had to use their data.  Lebara is excellent in my experience.
  • Looks like lebara then. Cheers folks.
  • Looks like you've decided but they will want some data to use at school during lessons, a rolling monthly or payg with data boosts is a good idea in case they need more data and that way you're not tied in on a contract. Also with someone you can set a spending cap with as you don't want any extra charges.

Do they not use the schools WiFi? Surly 5gb should be ample unless they want them to watch videos!

I'm sure 5gb will be enough for school. I was only offering some advice so you didn't get tied in on contracts you regretted. There are so many 1 month sims (Lebara may have these anyway) now with great deals there's no need for 12 month contracts anymore. Even if the WiFi at school is good enough (it rarely was at my daughters) they will use their phones at other times such as on the way to school, after school, breaks, when out with friends etc.

School WiFi is often next to useless and 5Gb is about the lowest you’ll get nowadays (some networks do less but at a higher price)
