  • I have now had my second response from CIFAS and it's not the easiest document to decipher but there are marks against me for "false instrument paid in". They filed for this mark in Sept 23 but it has only been recorded in August 24.

No idea what will happen next

Do you have any idea what that could relate to?

CIFAS should have been updated at the time rather than a year later, but if you now have that marker, expect other accounts to be closed.

Yeah I paid a cheque in to my bank for someone I classed as a friend who said they needed it asap and only temporarily. The payer went to their bank six months later and said they work hadn't been done that they had paid for

Oh yes, sorry, you did say that last week - you also mentioned legal advice, so it's perhaps worth discussing with the solicitor whether there are any steps that can be taken to clear your name with Coop Bank, otherwise you'll have the CIFAS fraud marker for six years, which will preclude access to all mainstream financial products....

Thanks I have reached out to the lawyer but no doubt she will have long forgotten me by now as it's taken over a year to get to this stage!

To be honest it's a bit of a long shot anyway - if you participated in fraudulent activity, even if unwittingly, as some sort of mule, then it's unlikely that there'd be any grounds for getting the marker removed.

Yeah I understand that and have kind of accepted it as punishment for my stupidity. As long as I can use a Monzo or Wise for my salary I can grin and bear it and move on.

My concern is further legal action against me or Monzo and/or Wise also removing my accounts leaving me with nothing.

I think it would be prudent to expect your Monzo and Wise accounts to be closed, but doubt that there's much likelihood of legal action unless there was a serious amount of money involved and you were seen as deliberately defrauding its rightful owner.  However, your solicitor is obviously best placed to offer advice, given their professional qualifications and full visibility of all the circumstances.
  • How does anyone ever get paid a salary with a CIFAS marker if every bank account gets closed ??
