've managed to use the PC to buy my 'Extra Value M-173 2GB MP4 Player with built in Speakers', have worked out how to get it out of the box and the CD into my CD drive - but am now totally bemused. The manual is useless and doesn't tell you how to get started. Even my techno savvy teenagers have given up! I have 3 options to click on: 0009 0404 0804 (possibly product numbers but no indication of this on the player, box or manual)and then I have to decide which program to open the file in. Have almost given up after a month. Anyone out there able to help?

Have you plugged it into your computer? Does it show up in My Computer? What operating system are you using? Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0

Yes - have managed to charge the player and plug it into the computer. I just can't access the disc and am ever hopeful that if I manage to do this it might take me step by step through everything I need to know. My computer uses windows xp0

If the CD is required to install drivers on the PC (it may not be necessary for XP), this needs to be done before plugging the device into the PC. The CD may just contain some software. If you click on My Computer or open windows Explore, do you see the device, possibly shown as a removable drive?

Yes, device is shown when I go into my computer. I have clicked on CD rom icon then I get a choice of: convert too., Driver, Telbook & winRAR. Have clicked driver then setupdir and that's when I get the choice of 0009 0404 0804 all of which then lead to a pop up box asking me which program I want to use to open the file in. Have tried this with the player unplugged too. Have also tried the install option but this also asks for a program. Have tried the go online option to select a program but this is also a whole new world to me!0

If you can see the device, then you presumably don't need to install a device driver for it. I would have thought that you should be able to copy and paste any MP3 or MP4 file from your computer to the device using windows Explore and then play it on the device. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0

You've lost me there! will show your response to knowledgable teenagers when they arrive home. Will also consider finding the wind up gramaphone player again!0

Are you familiar with using windows Explore? Right click Start, Explore. Do you have any MP3 music files or MP4 video files on your computer? If so simply copy and paste from your computer to the device and then they should play on the device. Can now confirm that no driver need to be installed for use with XP. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0

According to disgusted teenagers I do not have the device showing on my computer - it is the CD icon that is there! If I could open the CD it would allow me to install the device (presumably that is the MP3 player) and then I could transfer music to it. I do have some tracks stored on my PC but presume I can't transfer until the player is recognised as a device by the PC. Have tried right click to eplore but that takes me down the same route - icon for SETUP.DLL then asking which program I want to use to open the file. Have tried Adobe, media player, RealPlayer but nothing works. I don't have WinZip - could it be anything to do with that or is that only for text files?0

Must admit I hate the "instruction manuals" that come with Chinese-made electronic gear...
You'll need to go through several steps, but first thing is to check whether your PC can detect when the device is connected. Turn on your PC without the player connected. Connect the USB cable to both PC and player. Turn on the player. You should immediately hear the Windows "dong-ding" sound of a USB device connected. Do you then get a window pop up with a message in it? If not, you probably don't need any extra drivers, and should be able to see the device in My Computer.
If you do see a message, tell us what it says.0 -

Do any other USB devices work on this PC? If not USB may need to be enabled in the BIOS. see here:doh: Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0
