We had a great full service, including "wardrobe boxes"; they decanted the clothes on hangers from our wardrobes into hanging rails in much less time that if we'd had to fold n pack!

But they didn't take the cats.

Which was a pity as, despite it being a very local move, one 5h4t in my car!

The cat that was, not the removers...
  • The wardrobe boxes are standard even if you don't have a full packing service. we were told to leave anything on hangers hanging and they would deal with them, and they did. In fact, had we had more hangers, we would have made better use of this by ensuring that more stuff was hung up!

Could have been worse though Alex - the cat could have done its business in one of the wardrobe boxes...

Does anyone know what actually removal men will pack up when you have the full deal with them, including a packing up and fragile service.

I'm unclear as to what we have to pack up ourselves. Obviously food, cleaning stuff, expensive and personal items. But what else do we need to pack up and what do the removal company pack up?
No, they'll pack all those things too.

    Things to pack yourself:
    1) Things you'll need in the first 24hrs of being in the new property (bog roll, underwear etc)
    2) Pack anything you wouldn't want them seeing/handling for whatever reason
    3) Small valuables (jewellery, watches, phones, computers etc)

3 is probably overkill as its unlikely they will steal anything (not had anything taken after many moves) but there no need to tempt fate and you don't want to be searching through 100 boxes to see where your engagement ring is.

On the topic of 2, I did a part load move many years ago and in addition to getting my 10 or so boxes I also managed to get a small box that wasn't mine... clearly the contents of a nightstand that they'd individually wrapped all the items inc the KY and some "toys" (which went back in the box still wrapped as soon as I realised what the first 15" thing was.

Ours did take plants but we only had a couple in large pots... we'd decided ourselves to put the small plants in a little box to transport ourselves.

In our last move we ended up having to take the doorbell chime and AC Remote back to the old place as they'd packed EVERYTHING that wasn't nailed down
  • Like everyone said.

But also to be honest, I would pack everything you need for a week!  This way, you have stuff for washing clothes, cooking, kettle, plates/cuterly, bedding etc (or have sleeping bags ready), shampoos, and have a menu for easy meals for 2-3 days, whilst you unpack your kitchen equipment.

Also it's worth, not only assigning colour coding for each room, but also include a priority sticker for each room!

NB also include your DIY kit for anything that was unscrewed or flatpacked.

    Good luck
