Overcharged for EV Charging by Geniepoint

Hi All,
Whilst on holiday we found a Genie point Rapid charger close by our accommodation, so we used it frequently to charge our car when it was getting low. It was easy as we already had an account with them and have a charge card linked to the account so we didn't need to faff about with Apps etc.

On the charger it had a large Sticker clearly stating that we would be charged a £1 connection Fee and 30p/kWh for the energy used.

After using the charger on several occasion's I though I had better check the Invoices I had received for the direct debit payments. I was alarmed to find I had been charged 79p/kWh instead of the 30p/kWh stated on the charger.

so I emailed them on the 16/8/23 explaining what had happened along with photos of the charger, which showed the charger ID number and the Tariff stated.

So far I have had no reply for Genie Point, so I thought I should call their customer services.
the Agent was most unhelpful, and said I should have checked their app for the correct prices.
and that they had not received any correspondence from myself. and she could not help me. I checked the Email with her and this was all correct, and the email attachments were not too large.

I feel that this situation is completely wrong, and if i bought apple from the shop, I would expect to pay the amount stated on the shelf, and wouldn't be expected to check an app.

has anyone else had this happen to them? I wounder how many other people this happens to daily.

I don't have an issue paying for what i have used, and I would have still used the charger if it stated 79p/kWh as it was convenient, but that's not really the point

I would make a formal complaint, give them a few weeks to sort.
Or being the not so nice person I am, I would contact my bank or credit card and explain it to them.
Both ways you will get your money back, but banks do like it when you are charged more than stated.

What charge did the actual display give you? If you were using the app the price is displayed before you start charging. 79p is the standard charge unless charging off peak when it drops to 75p

    You might expect but

If, when  the apple was rung up on the sales  till it showed a higher price than the shelf price then the shop could refuse to sell it to you for the shelf price.

  • It didn’t show a cost on the display, and it didn’t show a final cost break down at the end of the charge session either, only how many KWh I had used
  • This is the displayed costs

At face value it looks like a breech of contract, but I suppose you are not entering a contract at the charger since you have already signed up to Genie Point, so a contract is already in place and that states that the tariff is shown on the website and mobile app. This being the case, why put anything about the tariff on the charger at all? Seems like sharp practise, maybe an attempt to lure people into signing up by showing an apparently low price only to find out it’s higher once signed up.

All display prices (eg shelf edge / banner) are merely "invitation to treat".
Price is only agreed when paying.

But it sounds like the OP was shown one price.  But then billed at a different price once they had used the service.
So at no point did the OP have a chance to agree or disagree to the new price.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.
  • I'm more amazed that you found a working Geniepoint charger!
