Not signed a Contract gas company demanding daily charges

  • Many thanks to everyone for your replies. The meter readings are the same, the gas leak was detected by the builder and someone from the board attended with an hour to remove/seal the meter (as the leak was near coming from the meter). The boiler was disconnected prior to the purchase with no other mean for gas usage. The suppliers are Corona Energy if that helps. We have contacted them and were advised that according to their search on their national database they supply gas to the property and are on the deemed tariff and liable for the amount. We received a bill few days ago for £120 monthly charges.

As this supply seems to a business supply, I am wondering if deemed contracts for businesses and residential are different?

Corona Energy are a business-omly supplier. Business tariffs aren't capped by Ofgem and you could well have run up £2400 of standing charges.
Is this a residential property? What was it previously used for? Was it eg. a pub or B&B?

Think I read a few posts here where sole traders / contractors etc could and some had registered a normal residential house on a business tariff - even if only really applied to say bedroom used as an office or garage as storage / workshop.

But there were in theory many caveats on split of use etc + VAT , green levies etc. to factor in at one stage

Does Corona Energy also supply the Electric ?   Any issues ?

    PS £120 /month not unusual - I am paying £9.08 a day
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill

There are quite a few residential properties on a business tariff.
Like you say, people running small businesses etc, and things like student let's etc

£2400 for only 2 years standing charges?  Is this a domestic property or commercial?  Are they trying to charge you for before you owned the property?
But a banker, engaged at enormous expense,

  • Thankyou so much for all your input. Also noticed the bills have the old account name and not mine. Think will have to resort to instructing a solicitor as Corona want all the payment!

If they are sending bills with the wrong name on them, they aren't going to get very far.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.
  • the meter readings are the same and no gas was used. the building was vacant for over 9 years before we bought it and the boiler was disconnected with no use of gas at all. we took pictures of the meter as proof
