Our flight was cancelled late at night 19/10/23 , on way back from Palma. same thing happened to our friends, but they were offered another flight the next day .
We weren't offered anything , so booked flights home with Ryanair. 
Are we due the Ryanair flights back ? who do we approach for this BA just talks about a refund, but the Ryanair flights were more expensive .

BA were obliged to offer you rerouting, which can be on another airline if they didn't have capacity on their own.  If they failed to offer anything at all, then you're entitled to claim back the cost of the alternative flight rather than accepting a refund of the lower original flight cost.

BA should also have arranged accommodation/meals if applicable.

Depending on the reason for the cancellation, you may also be due compensation:

Very surprised that BA did not automatically offer a rerouting.  Options normally appear within the Manage My Booking section of your account.  If not another PMI > LON flight that day or day after, one of several connections via BCN or MAD with sister carrier Iberia.

yes I found that surprising too , nothing offered and radio silence .
