They know I want to stop auto renewal as another insurer (who I spoke to) approached them about my NCB. Such a dodgy company...
    How did they approach them?

In all my years in working in insurance no one has ever approached me to ask about one of our customer's NCD however there are central databases that some insurers subscribe to where they can go check for themselves but we as your current insurers dont know that someone else has looked up a record of one of our customers.

Insurers simply wouldn't have the time to sit in 30 minute queues to speak to another insurer and even if they did have the time the third party insurer would state they cannot discuss the policy on the grounds of data protection

I took my eye off the ball a bit with this - my insurance expires on 6/7 so I started investigating in earnest on 1/7

Imagine my surprise (as Viz says) that they had already taken payment - around £35 dearer than last year. OK it's there in my emails that they would do this, but still seems off, and hands up, I had missed this

BUT - there was no info in the emails they send last month about what my new premium would be, I can't access my current or previous policies through the portal, Live Chat doesn't work, no email address that I can be certain is monitored, and the phone number is hard to find and when you do find it, after a long preamble it just rings and rings

Community note - preambles be aware, if I could do something online, I wouldn't be phoning

Also don't remember being asked about auto-renewal last year, and I would never have signed up for that, so maybe in small print somewhere

I think I might have to take this on the chin, but I definitely want to get off the auto-renewal

The majority dont ask, it's a condition of sale.

You are still before your renewal date so are free to ask them to lapse the policy rather than renew but thats dependent on you making contact etc. On the flip side a £35 increase is going to be considered by many to be a good result compared to what the majority are seeing.
