Flight delay Gatwick runway closure compensation

Hi all
We (family with 2 kids) were delayed over 4 hours on our return journey from Croatia (meaning we took off post midnight) to Gatwick - but it was due to the runway being closed at Gatwick earlier that afternoon. We had poor communication - on our way to the airport, telling us flight was delayd by an hour, then that changed later to 2 hours, it wasn't until we were through security that it became clear by us looking online that it was more likely to be 3 hours. There was no info on the board at the airport etc. According to the rules, with the flights over 1500km, delay over 4 hours, we should be entitled - except that it being runway closure would put it out of the airline's responsbiliity (presumably). Is it possible then to claim from the airport?
Thanks for any thoughts, advice etc

You are correct, a runway closure is not the fault of the airline.
And no, you cant claim compo from the airport. If you have suffered consequential losses you either claim on your travel insurance or you can attempt to sue the airport in small claims, I cant recall any successful example of this though so I wouldnt bother. You cant claim through travel insurance or sue them just for "compo" though, thats not how it works

No compo this time.
It was an emergency runway closure and the length of time of the closure crept on, hence why information regarding the delay changed.0
