Late night Rome arrival

In my opinion the Terravision bus is a big rip off. It's about a tenner as I recall to the city centre but there's a regular service bus that will take you to the train station at Ciampino for a euro and then you can get the train to Termini, the main centre for all transport in Rome.

We arrived in the early hours and didn't find Rome at all threatening, although as always you have to be sensibly cautious. The only problem with all this is I don't know if the buses run late at night. We shared a taxi to Termini and paid out less than a Terravision bus, but we'd been switched to Fiumincino airport.

Because of cancellation problems - I'll spare you the story! - we made several daytime trips from Ciampino to the city by the route I mentioned at the beginning.

By the way, we also stayed at a nice hotel in Ciampino (I'll try to dig out the name if anyone needs it), which is a very modern, pleasant if non-descript suburb ten minutes from the airport. We also had a couple of very good meals there, far better value and more authentic than the rip-off city centre tourist traps.

We're going back for a week in July and hoping to head out to somewhere nice on the coast by train (Rimini?). Any ideas or tips most welcome!
  • i would happily take public transport if i could, the only problem being like you said i can't be sure if the busses will be running and don't want any hassle so late at night.

i intend to take the bus everywhere for the time i am there.

I think the Terravision bus only goes to Termini so depending how far you need to go from there you might want to think about alternatives.

I've seen a reccommendation on another site (Trip Advisor) for a reliable taxi driver who will apparently charge a fair price and pick you up. You can email and arrange collection.

It might be worth working out if this is better than getting to Termini in the middle of the night and then needing a taxi anywhere and having to chance your arm - I've heard many Rome taxi drivers are rip-off merchants.
  • thanks for the taxi driver warning.

think i will just take it as it comes, but i may see about this taxi driver even if its just from termini to the hotel.

    how ace is trip advisor?!

If you haven't seen them already, two recommended on there are stefano at romecabs@yahoo.com and romaclick.com. I'm going to try them both and book in advance.

late night collection from Ciampino to our accomodation near the colloseum usually 42 euros but an extra 3 euros because it was after midnight! Some firms charge an extra 20% for late arrivals. He helped us with our bags and provided us all with brollies ( 3 of us but he had a mini van that would have taken about 8 people) to shelter us from the rain till we got inside our apartment. His English is very good - he used to work in London.
