Late night Rome arrival

I am flying into Rome with RyanAir in August around midnight and want to know is it best to look for a hotel near the airport (Campinino) or get the bus into the centre. How easy is it to get into a decent hotel at 1am? How safe is it around the rail station?
Also does anyone know of any decent hotels in Rome, Venice, Florence and Tuscany? Thanks

i have got this same problem coming up in october as my flight is also the latest. it seems there is a shuttle service run by Terravision
these are there especially to connect with ryanair and easyjet flights, and will drop you off at the main rome station where you can get a taxi to your hotel.
using this service it would be good to get a hotel in the city, and i have heard that many of the advertised hotels on expedia are quite a distance from the city itself and the attractions.
visit Trip Advisor and put rome into the hotel search. it will take a while but all the hotels are rated by the public so making a choice is much easier.'What's poignancy grandad?'

Thanks. The Trip Advisor site is good - if a little confusing - so much conflicting advice from hotel visitors!0

Whilst waiting for the overnight train from Rome to Venice we ate in a small bakery around the back of the station. I think it was mafia run  and I was scared to death, but the people in there were really friendly and not at all threatening. It was the 7 foot tall, 6 foot wide bruiser with sunglasses (it was nearly midnight) who was leaning on a big black Mercades with blacked out windows that scared me  but even he was really friendly. The owner even gave us a free bottle of water when he realised we were broke (it was the last day of the hols and we were scratting about with change to pay) :T
Overall I found it quite safe around the area of the station (the mafia keep it that way), if you can learn some Italian (even just hello, yes, no, I'd like (then use pointing), please and thank you) then the locals will appreiciate it and be very friendly. In the train station they all speak English.
I can't recommend any hotels but there is a fantastic campsite in Florence just down the hill from Michelangelo piazza, the views over Florence are amazing, they might have log cabins or caravans to hire if you are prepared to go self catering? The website is HERE with good direction on buses to catch etc. One tip, if you are travelling around and can arrange it try not to stay in Florence over Saturday night, Florence is famous for it's many churches and the bells start to ring very early in the morning :rolleyes:When life hands you a lemon, make sure you ask for tequilla and salt0 -
Thanks. Good tip about Florence. The bells, the bells....0

We stayed at the Beehive backpackers hostel near the station. Here is a link: http://www.the-beehive.com/english.html. It was about £20 each per night as I recall. It was clean and secure and well-run. They do private rooms too.
They are on Via Marghera. Nextdoor (on the side away from the station) is a tourism information place. We enjoyed staying there.
Anyway I hope you enjoy your holiday.:j I :heartpuls this site! :j0 -

We flew to CIA recently on the East Mids flight, meant to arrive 2350 but was delayed so we got there at 0100. The Terravision bus did indeed wait for the delayed passsengers -- which is more than can be said for our friends at Hertz car hire (with whom we had a booking through the Ryanair website)0 -

i was worried it would cost loads in taxi fares or something if the flight was delayed.'What's poignancy grandad?'
