Maybe I should have elaborated to say that £5 per year dual fuel cheaper than average competitor price cap is not best SVR rate, might not be second best SVR rate available.
For me - and I have done many quotes based on actual KWh use - it's quite a bit cheaper (even without their extra services), £14 per month cheaper than the closest alternative which is EDF's SVR.
I initially read it as £14 per year saving.

Domestic customers are unlikely to find any suppliers single rate SVR variable tariff £14 per month (168 per year) cheaper than another suppliers SVR tariff unless possibly comparing non DD payment version with DD version

Do bear in mind that a good number of people have found UW's customer service to be truly appalling. generally speaking, the only folk who speak particularly highly of them are those who stand to benefit from encouraging people to switch to them...that in itself tells you a fair amount.

I personally wouldn't be willing to touch them with a barge pole borrowed from the owner of the worlds longest barge poles. Been there, done that, paid the price.

Are any providers any good with customer service. Shell Energy aren't, EDF aren't.

Octopus historically have been.  Since the energy costs spiralled and they've been busier, it's been less good than it was, and with the takeover of Bulb they were still busier.  Not sure about now though; the AI customer service has been useless for me but once humans pick it up and get involved they've still been stellar, in my recent experience.

If Octopus do buy the Shell retail business then I can only see their CS being under even more strain. It'll make them second in size only to BG.

Still, even then, their CS will be four times as good as BG (imo)
