Quite frankly even if there was a working filter for it, my idea of "large garden " is at least  4  times that of most people.
"Most people" aren't very big though, so 4 x that wouldn't be a very big garden....

Which explains why I was disappointed viewing houses described as having a big garden…

In seriousness that is why such filters will likely never work on rightmove. EAs write the listings and make these subjective decisions with some using poetic license with things that should be objective e.g. number of bedrooms or detached/semi/terraced, there is no hope for garden size filters to be effective when the simpler classifications are frequently wrong.

surely there could be a "private garden" tick box to rule out all the communal gardens

There could be but you have to weigh up whether that would be worth it to most viewers and to Rightmove to have to categorise? Flats with a garden tend to be expensive, converted from older houses where either it's a shared garden or the ground floor flat is the "garden flat" and listed as such. if you want a garden don't go for a flat,in my opinion.

What proportion of search results are you getting where you need to manually distinguish between communal and private gardens? Sounds like your other criteria are too wide.

What people even call a "garden" might vary anyway - some might not regard a concrete yard or parking area as a "garden" while others might value it as private land.

Well I would. But it is your choice and is dependent on price and location.

I can remember telling an agent that we wanted a large bedroom.  He asked why.  Our response was that we had a large bed  :D.  On other occasions we said we wanted a large kitchen.  Again the EA asked why.  The look on his face when we said we had a full height fridge, full height freezer, small freezer, washing machine and dishwasher was a picture.  Were we that unusual?

EAs ideas of what constitutes a “large” garden vary hugely.
