This is absolute daylight robbery when we are using a 21 year old 1.2 Polo. Its petrol, not filthy dirty diesel. Even looked into buying a newer second hand car but the prices are ri diculous and yet I see many ridiculously oversized 4 x 4 style cars cluttering up the roads more and more.

  • Age of a car is a small factor in pricing car insurance. Your car will probably do the same damage to my rolls royce (I wish).... than any other car. To be honest I reckon £200 is a good price nowadays

The OP is talking about tax, not insurance.

Tax is based on emissions. A 21 year old petrol is likely to be much more polluting than a modern diesel

Very few diesel are under 1.6 so a diesel of that age would cost £325
Even a 2 Yr old polo costs £180

You could always buy a brand new one, a poverty spec. Polo is £23,205, and costs £180 a year to tax, say they gave you £1205 as a trade-in, then it would only take 1000 years or so to recover the outlay with the saving!! :)

Or more practically, if you swapped for a 1.6Tdi bluemotion golf from before 2017 it is band A- zero tax, you could get a runner for £3000 plus your polo, so you would be looking at breaking even in less than 15 years as VED goes up by CPI (the higher one, that is completely useless for everything except setting tax increases)
I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

(except air quality and Medical Science ;))

I don't think road tax covers collisions.

I very much doubt it. look at the black smoke that comes out of busses, canal barges.

Comparing a petrol 1.2 polo with a diesel canal barge is hardly a like for like comparison…
