I agree with the other posters who are saying that ants are more beneficial than detrimental to the average gardener. I wouldn't try to kill the ants, but address the actual problem, which is the aphids damaging the rhubarb.
The thing that's worked best for me is planting nasturtiums near by. These are much more attractive to both aphids and blackfly than my other plants, so given a choice that's where they live. They then attract beneficial insects, like ladybugs, hoverfly and lacewing, which go on to pollinate and protect the plants in my garden.
I'm not an early bird or a night owl; I’m some form of permanently exhausted pigeon.
