Halifax 9 digit username only at Halifax end

Anyone else had this problem.
Today 12 month fix maturity proceeds went back to Halifax account, I had to call Halifax fraud line to get payment authorised to a new payee
Person I spoke to after calling up my details said he could only see a 9 digit numerical username. nothing to suggest I was required to phone to get a payment approved, ( I mentioned that 12 months earlier I did not encounter same problem)
After authorising payment via correct username he transferred me to online banking to sort out duplicate username, they said its a technical problem and that I had to phone back after 48 hours so they can say what they are going to do for me,
I have never used a 9 digit numerical username myself. I only use online banking never mobile banking.

HBOS legacy usernames were [initial][surname][5 digits]. My Halifax login still has this format. Not aware of a 9 digit username personally.1

Lloyds usernames were initially numerical.35har1old said:

It's likely that you were allocated one as the current LGB platform is based on Lloyds systems.1
