Apparently I'm a volt customer of O2, because I also have Virgin media, so that is why it was free.

I see, thanks.  I went back to O2 because of their commitment to EU Roaming.  I'm on a fairly new contract of £8 a month for 20GB and with 3 or 4 Greggs coffees/rolls a month I've no complaints and won't begrudge not getting Worldwide roaming!  Three PAYG has met my needs outside the EU in recent times and works well.

There may be others, but the main one I know that offers unlimited data in the US is the T-Mobile (USA) eSim, which I think is somewhere in the region of USD 50 for a month. It works with iPhones via an app, you'd need to check compatibility for other devices (obviously need to be able to handle eSim and 5G)

Airalo works pretty well too and is cheaper unless you're going to use a lot of data (i.e. more than 20GB). Bear in mind that Airalo is data only, you can't use it for voice calls (your own sim would still work for that if you had voice roaming on). It will work ok for WhatsApp/FaceTime calls. The T-Mobile eSim is voice and data. For a lot of people this is unlikely to be an issue.

I've used both of these in the US this year (for my son, my own phone plan has roaming included). Both work well. If you are a TikTok user, you might have problems accessing it over mobile data via Airalo in the US, there is some sort of issue with either Airalo or TikTok  being detected as coming from Hong Kong, which causes a problem in the US.
