So now I need to find out what is sucking so much power...
Unplug the fridge for a couple of hours ( will be fine ) and see what your usage is during that time. A lot of things left on standby can easily add up to quite a bit of power usage. As can house alarms, chargers, wired in detectors, boiler circuit etc...

There is always going to be a minimum amount of power your house will use which you cant really reduce

According to British gas usage which is very detailed, my house uses about 0.14kw an hour. That's 1.14kw over 8 hours, so not far off what you are reading and but I am running two new fridge freezers and leave everything on standby.
If your fridge is the culprit at 1.4kw night then I would personally change it.

You mean 0.14kWh in an hour, or about 140W continuous power on average.

    That's 1.14kWh over the 8 hours.

The OP's fridge is not using 1.4kW.

This thread has highlighted another dilemma I think. If the fridge freezer is so inefficient that it is replaced what do you do with the old one.

If the aim is to save you money, just sell it on.

If the aim is to save the planet then decommissioning may be best, wonder if there is any scrappage schemes for items like this.

Indeed. My fridge works perfectly well and has done so for many years. To simply toss it seems a huge waste, though.

The OP said in a later reply they are using 1.5kw a night? I was merely stating that my 2 fridge freezers are not generating that ever.

    kWh.

    not kW.

One is power, one is energy.

    They mean different things.

Confusing which one you are talking about can lead people the wrong way.

And I'm pretty sure your F/Fs are not generating anything.

    Update:
after some faffing and experimenting it seems that my fridge does use about 1.7-1.8kWh/day (but I would probably need a longer period of time to be sure). That equates to approximately 638kWh/year.
A fridge similar to mine that is D rated would use about 200 kWh/year. Say I use instead 260kWh/year, that would mean a saving of about 380 kWh/year, or at 0.29/kWh about £110/yr. Considering that the fridge costs about £650, even if electricity costs do come down it seems to me like be a no brainer (and I should have done 12 months ago, but never mind...)

    Any opinion?

BTW, by turning off a few things on standby I have managed to reduce consumption by about 0.9 kWh/day, which over a year equates to about 300 kWh or just shy of £100.
Why didn't I do that before??? I need to be consistent with this now, though.
