Notice of Proposed Driving Disqualification : Should I respond in writing or attend court ?

The elderly gentleman is going to be even more upset if you kill a roadworker whilst doing 70mph in a 30 zone. And I doubt the roadworker's orphaned kids would be much mollified by your explanation.1

I don't think the OP has mentioned roadworks, so we don't know why the 30 limit was in force.Steve182 said:
I did a speed awareness course 4 years ago and was told on the course that in roadworks they dropped speed by 20mph (so 70 = 50, 50 = 30 etc). I know this won't help but seems completely bonkers that they would do such a thing. Please don't tell me there were no roadworkers on the road at the time either!dearyn said:Apologies :
My situation is I completed a drivers awareness course in July ,22 to maintain my clean licence. In May this year I was doing 72 on my usual stretch of motorway, which I didn't realise was reduced to a 30 mph limit.
It could have been an accident, broken down vehicle, sheer weight of traffic, etc.0 -
it doesn't matter why the speed limit was in force, or what the speed limit was. If the limit was exceeded then it it is speeding.Steve182 said:

As mentioned already OP should focus their argument on the impact on the person they are caring for, rather than trying to mitigate the offence.

Would be irrelevant to the offence if it were the case.Steve182 said:

What strikes me about the case is that OP is talking at great length about why it happened, mitigating circumstances, impact if they get disqualified. But I don't think they say anywhere "I wasn't paying attention, I was distracted, I have learnt from this and will pay more attention in future to prevent a repeat".1

I'm nothing if not corrigable....contrition and remorse would be a given I would have thought. I'm grateful to the kind souls here offering their advice. Please feel free to continued to add any more thoughts if they come to mind, all suggestions are most graciously received. Thank you all so much

I accept that you are contrite and remorseful. I have myself attended a speed awareness course having been distracted by a colleague and thinking a 50 limit was still a 60. It struck me that everyone was very keen to excuse their speeding, and the whole course was designed to break this down and make them realise there is no good excuse. So I suspect it is quite unusual for an offender to come to the court and say I'm really sorry, I've learnt my lesson, I'm going to make the old chap sit in the back and be quiet and I've taken up yoga to calm myself before a journey.
It might just work. Good luck.1 -
...may well be worth a punt ..thank you 😊1
