August/September 2023 Switching
I have always looked 2 months prior my current contract expiring and create a spreadsheet to compare and contrast the permutations.
My current contract is due to expire end September and when running through my details on USwitch only 1 Supplier was recommended.
I knew of the embargo 2 years ago when all this kicked off however it seems there is still little information given,
Is the below suggested in-line with what is expected?
How do I expand my search to find more supplier / the best rates ?
I do not have a smart meter, is it time I got one to access the better rates?
thanks.

Sounds par for the course - you are looking at an increase of 50%
Have you looked at the new kid on the block - Fuse ?Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill2 -
Suppliers are not making much profit so they are not paying the referral fees to comparison sites.
Look on supplier's own sites to get quotes.
That suggested fix doesn't look unusual.
Getting a smart meter only gets you access to a few more tariffs (right now). All the complicated ones (I think) with Octopus. These have been very cheap recently but, of course, past results do not guarantee future performance.2 -
The very few fixed deals about at the moment, have very similar rates to the Standard Variable Rate (SVR). So whether a fix is good for you, is a very personal choice right now.
We're seeing a few fixed rates be posted on this energy board, but you sometimes need to be with that supplier already, and even then, not everyone is being offered the fixed rates.
Smart meters will give you more options, especially with suppliers like Octopus, who have lots of different smart tariffs.
I'm on their Tracker tariff, which is currently at about half the unit rates of the SVR, although it's not always guaranteed to be lower, and can spike massively in price.
If you're thinking about switching to a different utility company, ask around friends and family for any referral codes too. Octopus for example, offer £100, split between the referee and new customer.1 -
Just to balance thread a little -
Eon Next , EDF, British Gas also offer refer a friend share £100 whether it be bill credit or in case of British Gas Amazon Voucher.
Eon Next, Scottish Power and British Gas do not charge exit fees if a customer subsequently decides to change from standard 12 month fixed rate tariff to another tariff within the company including changing back to SVR.
EDF,.Octopus Energy and OVO do charge exit fees if a customer subsequently decides to change from standard 12 month fixed rate tariff to another tariff within the company.4 -
Where can I find out more about Eon Next £100 RAF share pls?0

https://www.eonnext.com/electricity-and-gas/refer-a-friend
Presumably every existing customer has their own unique code so you just to need find someone who is already with them and get their code.3 -
I’m with eon next and can refer. £50 each apparently1

Hi all, thank you for the comments. Great advice regarding the referral codes and cashback.
I am currently with Octopus. I have not received any renewal options or hints to opt into the smart meter for better rates from them.
If I were to opt into a smart meter and get it installed via Octopus; whilst it may open the door to better rates with themselves, is there a risk I will restrict myself with other providers, or do all providers use smart meter?
thanks,
