Long stopover in JFK

A friend has a long stop over in JFK (arriving 10.20 Newark Thursday leaving 5.35 am Friday from JFK terminal 4).

Any advice?
a) Can they sleep at the airport?
b) Anything that they can do during the day?

That's a long day in New York, rather than layover as they need to get to JFK from Newark.

Newark to Manhattan, day in NYC, plenty to do as its a city that really does never sleep. NYC to JFK.

The biggest headache is transport between the airports and Manhattan,

Yes, anyone needing ideas for a day in New York is suffering from a lack of imagination! I had a few hours spare in Newark many years ago, so jumped in a yellow cab and did the Empire State Building - (many) other clichéd tourist attractions are available....

It is more how to make the best use of the limited time - particulary considering the possible confused state after very little sleep the night before.

If sleep is priority book a room for day use in a hotel local to Newark.

If they're already sleep-deprived then the most obvious thing to do would be to book a room at a hotel at/near JFK and to get there early enough to get a decent night's sleep before the early start. That would still leave plenty of time to enjoy the sights of Manhattan first though....

That's one awful flight setup - bad enough at the same airport but to change airport too.
They won't get utility from a overnight hotel room so book for daytime only and do something like this -

    * Arrive 12am at Penn Station (Midtown Manhattan) from Newark
    * Leave luggage at hotel, go for lunch/sightseeing.
    * Use the daytime room for shower/ change/ maybe siesta.
    * Check out early evening & leave luggage with the hotel.
    * Spend a few more hours sightseeing and a late dinner.
    * Collect luggage from hotel and head to JFK late evening on the A/E trains from Penn Station to Airtrain.
    * Arrive JFK, check in bags and then grab a drink/beverage or head to lounge for 2/3 hours then head to gate.

I'd actually look for a later flight back so they can get a whole day/night in NYC.

We had to drive from Washington to JFK and because the traffic is dreadful we left with quite a lot of spare time. We went to Rockaway beach for the day. As per the Dire Straits song. We ate in the beachside bar and had lobster. Was a lovely day and not far to the airport. Just something different. We had already been to New York sightseeing earlier in the holiday.
  • I see there is a new hotel at JFK, Stayed a couple if times at the Heartbreak Hotel, but  sadly closed down.
You do need to say ages and budget,
In my backpacking days certainly a layover I wouldn't have minded. Day and evening in NYC with plenty of coffee and doughnuts, get to JFK about 8pm  and crash for a few hours
