What are people’s thoughts about flip phones? The new Samsung one is very tempting, but obviously concerns about the screen are in my mind especially when it costs nearly £1k

  • Tempting, but not at that price.

I do like the format though.

Having seen some of the horror stories of folding screens, I'd only go for one with my eyes wide open knowing I might end up having to pay to repair it. For now, as much as they are selling in their thousands, I wouldn't touch one with a bargepole, and I tend to be an early adopter on quite a few things.

I have massive difficulty understanding what would compel someone to spend £1k for a mobile phone. :'(

Stay away from the Samsung flip and z fold phones…. Almost all crack and Samsung WILL void your warranty.

I can understand spending £1k on a phone (bought outright, kept for many years and used with a cheap sim only deal) but I wouldn't spend it on a folding phone with such an obvious point of failure in the design.

If it was just a mobile phone I would agree but they are so much more than that.  Not that I have ever spent anything like that on a mobile phone.

I had a few old fashioned flip phones in my time, buttons on the bottom and small screen on the top.

Can't see me being interested in a modern style flip phone for a good few years yet, if ever.

Things that are differerent: draw & drawer, brought & bought, loose & lose, dose & does, payed & paid

For me, the inner plastic screens are far too fragile for my liking.  Also, it's a lot of money for something that could a lot more easily break in half than a standard phone.

I think they are a great idea in terms of providing a compact phone that fits easily into a smaller pocket or car trinket tray but until the price drops to below say £400, the folded phones get thinner and problems are resolved on the folding mechanisms, I'm out.
  • It sounds to me like the OP was, in fact, referring to smart phones that flip, rather than the phones that people used before smart phones came along. Having had an iPhone for six years or so, I've just retired it and gone back to using my old Doro flip-phone that has sat in a drawer during that time. I finally got fed up with all these apps that get forced on us all. Only way to have access to Wimbledon, and probably to buy the tickets, is via your smart phone and the LTA app. We'll soon be forced to have several apps to park our car. I see no reason why I should have to fork out several hundred quid in order to solve other people's problems. My Doro cost £30 or so and does what I want.

It's not ideal for texting, so - does anyone have a recent Doro flip-phone or equivalent from another manufacturer?

Well my thoughts are that the new Galaxy Z Flip6 is a wonderous thing, but I would say that because I've bought one.

Was able to get the cost down to ~£500 by stacking various discounts and getting a generous £200 trade-in for a phone that cost little more than that 2 years ago.

The obvious advantage over a conventional slab is the pocket-ability, but that leads to the inevitable fragility of both the screen and the hinge. Mine came with a 12 month Samsung Care + policy (worth £100) which (it is claimed) covers all accidental damage and a 2 year warranty for anything else. This model has only been sold for a week so it's too early to see if the claims of additional robustness over previous models hold up.

The AI software that Samsung has bundled with the phone is a hoot, clever photo-editing tools and real-time translation both seem to work well, although editing photos on a six-inch screen is never ideal.

It's never going to get an enthusiastic reception on a board dedicated to saving money but for more geeky views check out the r/galaxyzflip subreddit.
