When a vehicle leaves the factory it has been manufactured to a specification. Unauthorised remapping will change that and it will therefore not complay with the certificate issued under Construction & Use.
In addition it would void the manufacturers warranty and quite possibly make the vehicle illegal to be on the road.
You are required to inform your insurance company of any such changes and IF they agree to give cover the premium will be high.
Geez.  Theres a lot of hand wringing in there.

The O/Ps car is out of warranty anyway.  Many reputable remappers will include a warranty to cover an engine fault where the manufacturer attributes it to the remap.

Remapping doesnt make the car illegal to be on the road.  Calm down.

Yes, you should inform your insurance company, most will cover a remap no problem and the premium could be as little as a few pounds extra per year.

Most...are you sure?  How many have you asked, or know of?   Can you name any that are fine with it?

But they could also ask you to take your business elsewhere...ie cancel.
Based on experience and what i'm hearing back on many of the car modding groups i'm part of on Facebook.

Clearly someone should check in advance of doing the work, just like they would with any modification to the car.

Completely agree. I've had remaps in the past for many tens of thousands of miles. More recently had a generic remap that was dropped on petrol turbo and now has apparently caused overheating and melted/damaged spark plugs so head is now off being refurbished. Not a quick or cheap process to resolve but car was running fine before.

Not all remaps are made equal!
I have no experience of remapping. Would an owner know, if they bought a car that had been remapped?
What can remapping do? My 1.7 Zafira has only once done a regen, at least that is what I believe. I have owned it over 3 years. Do they get remapped when the DPF is taken out?

Theres remapping for improved performance / economy and theres recoding of the car to ignore any DPF functions (often called "being mapped out").

Sometimes people will roll it all in to a performance remap, removed DPF, remove / bypass DPF coding.

if its done a regen at all, it suggests that has not been done on the car.

There is a lot more to remapping than people think. The various components on a vehicle are designed to meet the specification. Your car may be able to do 150mph rather than 100mph before remapping but tyres are speed rated - if you can now do 150mph the question is can your tyres. Braking systems are the same.

Having dealt with the aftermath of modifications I know there is a lot more to it than half an hour on a computer..

    Agreed.

The additional proposed BHP needs to be considered.  Often its maybe 140BHP from 120BHP, so unlikely to be an issue, but some maps can easily give a car a +40-50% power increase and often the brakes, suspension etc arent up to the additional power.

Agree with other posters, there’s a lot of components that’ll need to be considered to see if they’ll cope with the increased power. Not just a case of plugging into the ECU, playing around with few buttons on a laptop et voila, extra bhp.
